The Benefits of Servers
Some of you reading this may already know of the benefits of server based computing and may already be using servers in your business. Some of you might think that you are just a startup company or that your business is too small for a server. There may even be a couple of you who’s company is made up of just a few individuals who are sharing files via email, flash drives or some other means.
I say, every company, no matter how small, needs a server. Having a server in place during the early stages of your business will prepare you for growth. Using a server instead of other sharing means, will make sure that you are operating your communications and productively as smoothly as possible.
So, what is a server?
A server is a critical part of a network or infrastructure that can do a number of important functions, which may include:
- Provide shared access to files
- Provide central email and collaboration management
- Control who has access to network data through user names
If your business is not using a server, it can be extremely difficult to share files throughout your company and manage who has access to those files.
In the case of file sharing, you can think of the server as a central “filling cabinet” for your company’s information. This makes it very convenient, safe and productive to share or collaborate on various files. The storing of shared files on a server ensures the accessibility and security of those files to all authorized users at any time.
There are many types and brands of servers to choose from. You may want to consult a professional to help you decide which server features and platforms would be best for your computing environment.
